17-year-old Harley Coggins is currently studying for his level-two carpentry apprenticeship at Heyford Park near Bicester.
After studying his level-one course at nearby Banbury College, the college put Harley in touch with Dorchester Living, the developers of Heyford Park, as they had opportunities for Harley to continue his learning.
He explains:
“After leaving school I wanted to learn and earn on the job, so I completed my level-one apprenticeship. I didn’t know much about the construction industry before I started, but after speaking with some professional carpenters, I knew it would be a job that would always be in demand and that it would also provide job satisfaction.”
With Heyford Park not far from Harley’s home, he took up the opportunity to progress to the next level of his apprenticeship.
“The application process was straightforward, and I’ve been on site now for the last four months and every day is different, which makes the job enjoyable. I’m learning on the job and working with different team members, who give me the opportunities to try out new skills. They’re constantly providing feedback and advice for how to improve, and I really enjoy being able to learn the theory in college before applying it in real life on site.”
The apprenticeship has also helped Harley to learn other skills outside of carpentry and to help build his confidence. He explains:
“As well as learning about the trade, the apprenticeship has helped me to learn life skills and it’s been a great way to build confidence. It’s a friendly working environment and it’s also nice to work with other apprentices. My apprenticeship will be really helpful in terms of future career options, and I will definitely stay in construction. My best piece of advice to others is that a construction site is not as intimidating as you might think – it’s a great place to learn.”
