Daniel Bets, 16, started thinking about an apprenticeship in the construction industry after a conversation with school friends. He knew he wanted to start working and learning new life skills.
Discovering that a carpentry apprenticeship was available with Dorchester Living at Heyford Park, the new settlement near Bicester, he applied and interviewed for the position.
He says:
“I have always enjoyed problem solving and the idea of creating and building new things, and I felt that I was ready to move on from school. Taking on an apprenticeship meant that I could start working and learning trade skills along with life skills. I didn’t know much about the construction industry before applying, but I liked the idea of carpentry and being able to spend time outdoors learning trade skills which will set me up for the future.”
“When I started I really had no clue how it would go and if I am honest, I was quite nervous, but my advice to others would be to not overthink the experience and just to be yourself. Everyone I have met has been very welcoming and helpful, it’s a great place to work and learn.”
Since starting, Dan’s been working on a variety of projects, learning from his mentors and working with the wider team, something he’s found valuable.
“It’s been a great experience and I would recommend it, as long as you don’t mind the cold! I’m always working on different projects learning different skills, and it’s nice to work alongside some of the other apprentices too, which helps to build social skills, I am so much more confident since starting my apprenticeship. At the beginning I was nervous being so young, but the site managers have really helped me and eased me into the work.”
Daniel is looking forward to developing his skills further, moving on to levels 2 and 3 and progressing his career as a young carpenter.
“After I finish my 18 month apprenticeship, I would like to stay on to do more levels. I’ve been working with some incredible people and I’m really looking forward to learning more.”
